Butterfly School Winter Walk Get Sheets

Take a winter walk with one of our Butterfly SchoolwpeA.gif (24907 bytes) families!  This week, two terrific grandparent caterpillars share winter fun with granddaughter Ally & Ally's friend Pillar.

As one visitor writes, there are so many different families in the world, including "Grands raising grandchildren" -- and this week we want to specially salute all the grandparents who serve as fulltime caregivers.  Bravo!

Here are winter walk tips from my kitchen table to yours . . .

Make it fun to bundle up:  pretend you are putting on a costume -- but you are dressing up as a warm caterpillar!

Collect pine cones from friends who like to collect natural materials -- people who enjoy making wreaths often collect pine cones.

If you don't have a pine cone, wrap a toilet paper tube with brown construction paper.  Use a dark marker to draw on the texture of pine cone scales.  Use your crafted pine cone to make a "pine cone" butterfly!

Next week, we'll help caterpillars rest & take good care of themselves to get over a cold!

You are ready for the Activity Sheets now; you can print them from here (Get Sheets), or go back to the Butterfly School home page.

Teacher Tips
from Corinne Steigerwald

Enjoy a winter walk scavenger hunt!  Make a list of five things to look for before you go outside.   Before you go outside, give some hints about where you might find these sights.  As you walk, keep eyes open and see what you can find!  Work together -- if there are lots of one item, why not keep count?!

Here are ten things you might look for:

1.  icicles

2. bird feeders

3. birds

4. squirrels

5.  snow shovels

6. snow on roofs

7.  foot (paw) prints

8.  snow sculptures - snow people

9.  mailboxes

10.  snow plows
